Josh Hamilton = Roy Hobbs

If you've ever seen the movie "The Natural" starring Robert Redford, you know who Roy Hobbs is. Hobbs was a fictitious phenom that could do it all - crush a baseball, run the bases and fire rockets from the mound or the outfield. Hobbs gets shot in the movie and his career is derailed and he is out of baseball for several years. But then he comes back and exhibits all of the skills that made him a prodigy. And people gasp that they've never seen a player who was out of baseball for several years show up on the major league scene and dominate.
Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to the real life Roy Hobbs. His name is Josh Hamilton and he is this era's version of "The Natural". He was the #1 pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 1999 MLB draft and was labeled as a "can't miss" superstar. Then his life took a series of wrong turns. From cocaine to heroine addictions, he hit rock bottom and was out of baseball for 4 years. He resurfaced last year with the Cincinnati Reds and had a solid year in mostly a backup role. Then he was traded to the Texas Rangers this offseason and has had an MVP season so far leading all of baseball in RBI's with 95.
And he's knocking the cover off of the baseball. Case in point, last night's home run derby at Yankee Stadium where the world was introduced to Josh Hamilton and his back story. There's not a better story in sports this year than Josh Hamilton.
And he's only making $336K in salary this year so is there a better return on investment for any team in sports than the Rangers are getting with Hamilton? Despite his checkered past, if I were an endorser, I would sign him in a heartbeat. His upside is tremendous and I really do believe he has turned his life around for good.
Here's Hamilton's amazing display at Yankee Stadium last night in case you missed it:
